Should you sign an employment contract?

You may be offered an employment contract for a variety of reasons in Missouri. Not every employer will require one, but if you are told you will need to sign a contract to begin employment, it may help to learn more about your rights. That includes knowing when to not sign one.

Monster notes that employment contracts are usually put in place to protect the employer and may not have your best interests in mind. You should always read through it carefully before signing. Also, be aware that any reputable company will offer you the chance to negotiate your contract and ask for revisions.

Many people mistakenly think a contract means they have a guarantee the company cannot fire them. This is not true. You should read through the contract carefully to look for a termination clause or other wording specific to termination. Make sure you understand the grounds for which you could be let go and if you have protection under the contract for a specific period.

You should also make sure compensation is clearly spelled out in the contract. Do not sign a contract that does not mention payment. You do not want to agree to work for which you will not be paid or for which the pay is not what you had anticpated. You could get locked into the contract and have no choice but to work for whatever compensation the company wants if you sign it without ensuring it is specified in the contract.

Finally, make sure the job is detailed, along with the duties. You want to be sure you know exactly what is expected of you. When you sign a contract, it needs to be detailed. Do not sign it if you disagree with anything or ask for changes if you feel something is not right. This information is only intended to educate and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
