What is subtle sexual harassment?

The face of sexual harassment has changed due to many laws being in place to discourage such actions in Missouri workplaces. You likely are not going to be fired if you don't kiss the boss, be subjected to co-workers touching you inappropriately or get ogled while at work. Such blatant harassment is something people are aware is not okay and will be dealt with. However, taking its place is a new form of subtle harassment, which can be more difficult to deal with.

According to Forbes, subtle sexual harassment is often something others might not even recognize as harassment. It could be someone saying something inappropriate while you and co-workers are out for drinks. It could be a superior sending you a suggestive email from a private email account. It is not as in your face as the sexual harassment of the past.

Most sexual harassment today create a feeling of being uncomfortable in the workplace. You may feel as if you cannot focus on your work. The office may become a place that you do not want to be in because of someone else's actions.

Technology is also playing a larger role in harassment cases. Being able to text or email someone can lower inhibitions and lead to people saying things they normally would not. It can also make it harder to understand the intention, which could leave you feeling uncomfortable about an exchange. Social media is another area where issues can easily pop up. The bottom line is you should never do anything, no matter how minor it seems, to make another person feel embarrassed, uncomfortable or upset.
