What workers should know about their wages

As an employee in Missiouri, it is critical that you understand your rights and information regarding the amount you are paid for your time and efforts. Federal and state laws are in place to protect the rights of people who are employed in the state. Not all employers are required to follow certain parts of the statutes, however, making it crucial that people know what the laws are and how they pertain to their employment.

Employers that gross more than $500,000 annually are required to pay state minimum wage, according to the United States Department of Labor. Employees that receive tips while on the job, are entitled to half the minimum wage rate. Despite the lower hourly pay rate, workers must earn enough tips to bring their wages to at least minimum wage. If the amount falls short, however, the employer is responsible for paying the difference.

While you may not receive travel time for the distance it takes you to get to and from work, you are entitled to reimbursement for traveling that takes place during normal work hours as part of your job. Furthermore, employers are required to pay overtime wages, or time and a half, once you have worked more than 40 hours in a work week. Employers who wish to reduce your wages, they must give you a 30-day advance written notice. Whether you feel as though you have not been paid fairly or an employee is in violation of the wage laws, you may file a complaint with the Department of Labor Services.
